The behavior is there.
The other person is there.
The evidence is there.
And then, somehow, we construct another mind inside our own and call that understanding.
I could not make that leap.
The more I investigated, the more bizarre the problem became.
Theory of Mind is now deeply embedded in the language of social cognition. It appears in developmental psychology, cognitive science, autism research, empathy research, education, clinical practice, and philosophy of mind. We speak casually about mind-reading and perspective-taking. We are taught to imagine ourselves in other people's positions. We assume that some form of internal simulation allows us to infer what another person believes, feels, wants, or intends.
But the history is stranger than the finished theory makes it appear.
It began with Sarah, a chimpanzee.
The original Premack and Woodruff experiment asked whether Sarah had a theory of mind. She watched a human actor encountering practical problems and selected photographs showing appropriate solutions. The experiment was remarkable. The interpretation that followed was even more remarkable: perhaps Sarah was representing something about the actor's mental state.
From that beginning, an enormous intellectual structure developed.
My interest is in the point where an observation becomes an explanatory mechanism.
What did Sarah actually demonstrate?
And how did we move from a chimpanzee solving a problem to a general theory of how human beings know one another?
Those questions eventually led me into simulation theory.
Simulation seems intuitive because we all understand the experience of imagining a situation from the inside. But imagining what I would think, feel, or do is still an operation of my own mind. Whatever I generate remains a mental representation produced within my own cognitive architecture.
So where, in that process, do I actually encounter you?
That question sits at the center of the book.
The issue is not whether simulation is useful. It is whether a self-generated representation can provide access to another person as they are. An explanation of another person can reveal the explanatory architecture of the observer as much as it reveals the person being observed.
Aphantasia gave me an unusual way to examine the problem.
I do not have the mental imagery required for the representational theater assumed by the simulation-based account examined in this book. In panmodal aphantasia, the absence extends across sensory modalities. Remove the expected machinery of internal simulation and ask what remains.
The answer is recognition.
Another person's distress does not have to become an imagined version of my own distress before I can register that it is happening. Another person's pain can remain another person's pain. Recognition can occur without reconstructing the other as a private simulation.
This opens the argument into empathy, embodied empathy, social cognition, neurodiversity, ethics, and phenomenology.
If understanding is always mediated by the observer's own representational architecture, then whatever cannot be reproduced within that architecture becomes difficult to model. Difference is encountered not simply as difference, but as something that resists translation.
Phenomenology offers a radically different starting point: not the reconstruction of hidden interior states, but attention to the person who is already present.
The question shifts from How can I reproduce what is inside this person? to How is this person already present before I begin constructing an internal version of them?
That shift changes the epistemology of social understanding. It changes how we think about empathy, difference, and the relationship between representation and recognition.
A Fantastic Theory of Mind follows that problem from the history of Theory of Mind through simulation theory and mental representation to aphantasia, phenomenology, and the possibility of recognition without representation.
It asks what happens when we stop treating our internal models as though they were access to another mind.
And it ends with a question I could not escape:
What if recognition is possible only when simulation is not?
